I am always on the search for a good, reasonably priced dining experience in Santa Monica. They are few and far between. Vito's is no exception. I was disappointed in the overall quality of food and intermittent service for the cost of the meal. After all I read about this restaurant, I expected a scaled down, more `authentic` Italian restaurant... like red checkered table cloths with straw covered Chianti bottles...that's NY Italian style! The waiter's in suits is way over done, some more professional than others. Average entree is not $14-$20; more like $25.We ordered a Caprese salad ($11.95)to nibble on before entree and the tomatoes were cold and unripe and there was no inkling of olive oil. It was a sparse and tasteless appetizer for that price. Wine list is way over the top for the quality of food prepared. Sauces too heavy, almost commercial. Unimaginative and boring accompaniments...carrots, zucchini, and potatoes...ho, hum! Why would a $400 bottle of wine enhance this food? Vito, wake up and get with the times! A good neighborhood restaurant location, but not for what you are charging. Out the door, two people with no dessert or coffee, a moderate bottle of wine with 15% tip, for a mediocre meal... $130. I'll go to Valentino or Bucca Di Beppo next time.
